The Board applauds pharmacist involvement during the H1N1 outbreak last year and would like to remind all immunizing pharmacists to update their authority to immunize in the absence of a patient specific prescription: a valid collaborative practice agreement, as per rule #165. For your convenience, a sample immunizing collaborative practice agreement is available here. New**Electronic Prescribing -Although DEA final rules concerning the electronic prescribing of controlled substances became effective on June 1, 2010, the DEA FAQ link explains why all current systems do not satisfy these new DEA requirements: Within the preface of said rules, the DEA explained that industry will require much time to develop systems that will be compliant. Additionally, the Board has identified three sections of Idaho Code and nine administrative rules that require updating in order for the electronic prescribing of controlled substances to be allowed within Idaho. This can only be accomplished with approval of the 2011 Idaho Legislature. Also of note: electronically signed, controlled substance prescriptions that are faxed to a pharmacy are not considered electronically prescribed and are not legalized by these changes.
